ART OF DR. JOI NAM CHAN

Quite often people ask me how one should go about obtaining these precious qualities of health and happiness.  I tell them that according to my understanding, happiness is gained by the spiritual search for our higher Mind. The fame and fortune we seek, I say, are like rainbows in the sky and ripples on the water, arising by chance and ultimately impermanent. There is no end to desire; for the minute we get what we want, we want more. To attain real happiness, I believe, we must learn to let go, or in Buddhist terms, to practice non-dwelling. By letting go I am not suggesting that we plunge ourselves into a vacuum or a state of nihilistic nonexistence. Letting go simply means we make whatever efforts we can to stop clinging to the desires, dreams, imaginings, anger, illusions and material possessions that rouse our greed and keep us chained to the world. It means seeking after our higher Mind while we gradually detach from all the rest. In the end, to practice letting go is the best means I know of for understanding the essence of the Tao – and thus the best way I know to attain real happiness.

This portfolio documents my works in everyday life, besides Traditional Chinese Medicine, through these exploring years from arts, design, calligraphy, architecture, to gardening and more.
